Urgent Care or Emergency Room – What's the Difference?

When needing medical attention, sometimes it is not always clear where to go to receive it.

GLENPOOL - This community is ready to get a brand-new, full-service hospital.

Plans for the $70 million Divine Providence Medical Center were announced Tuesday at the Glenpool Conference Center.

Mayor Shane Buchanan said the City Council agreed to sell 20 acres at 156th Street and U.S. 75 for $2 million to 5 Starr Group LLC, developers of Divine Providence.

No groundbreaking has been set, although construction is expected to take 18 months.

During the news conference, Buchanan said he is proud the city government is helping bring convenient health services to Glenpool.

"It's been the stated goal and a primary focus of our City Council and administration to make Glenpool truly a full-service community," he said. "It's what our citizens want, and it makes solid economic and civic sense to seek balanced investment in our community through new retail, businesses, infrastructure and services."

He noted that the nearest medical facilities are in Sapulpa and Tulsa.

When it's finished, the 128,000-square-foot, two-story building will have 72 beds and offer emergency care, OB/GYN, pediatrics, cardiology and general surgery.

Buchanan said the city will build a road and provide infrastructure to the site at a cost that will not exceed $2 million. Essentially, the city's contribution will be paid for by the land sale.

Bob Baker, president and CEO of 5 Starr Group, said he has helped develop other medical centers, including St. John Hospital-Owasso, and has built other, smaller medical facilities in the metro area as part of 5 Starr.

Divine Providence will be the largest facility 5 Starr will build and operate.

Baker said Glenpool was an easy choice for development.

"Clearly, based on sufficient analysis, building along the U.S. 75 corridor made sense," he said.

Buchanan said the hospital is expected to employ 150 people and generate an annual payroll of $6.5 million to $7 million.

He said two additional medical office buildings could be constructed near the site, and he expects the facility to draw in some retail development.

Farther north on U.S. 75, plans are reportedly in the works for a medical complex and possibly a hospital in Jenks.

Land records show that a subsidiary of the William K. Warren Foundation, which established St. Francis in 1959, purchased property at the northeast corner of U.S. 75 and 111th Street in May 2009.

Officials said last summer that there were no specific building plans for the site and that developing such plans could take significant time.
